Medical Interpreter

A Medical Interpreter is a professional responsible for enabling both a professional and a client with very different backgrounds and perceptions, and an unequal relationship of power and knowledge, to communicate to their mutual satisfaction. 

A Medical Interpreter should be skilled in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, as well as sight translation and note-taking.  He/she should have a good knowledge of medical terminology and be sensitive to cultural differences. Medical interpreters work at medical settings, hospitals, and doctor's offices.

Associate Membership

The requirements for admission as an Associate Medical Interpreter of ATIA are:

Requirement 1 – Pass the Code of Ethics Examination

Review a case study and identify breaches of ATIA’s Code of Ethics and the Rules of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters. Minimum passing grade is 70%. Results are valid for one year.

Requirement 2 – Submit an Application for Review

1. Have passed the Code of Ethics Examination within the past twelve months.

2. Meet the hour requirements under one of the following options:

5. Register on-line and pay the Application Review fee.

Candidates will be offered Associate Medical Interpreter membership in ATIA once they meet the admission requirements. Annual membership dues Associate Members are $160.

Certification (Certified Membership)

Option – Portfolio Review


  • Be an Associate Medical Interpreter of ATIA in good standing
  • Prove hours of interpreting in a medical setting (obtain chart of hours required from
  • Submit letters of good character issued by former or current employers
  • Complete portfolio certification form
  • Pay portfolio certification assessment fee
  • Sign ATIA's Code of Ethics Agreement
Annual membership dues for Certified Members are $240.
