Medical Interpreter

A Medical Interpreter is a professional responsible for enabling both a professional and a client with very different backgrounds and perceptions, and an unequal relationship of power and knowledge, to communicate to their mutual satisfaction. 

A Medical Interpreter is skilled in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, as well as sight translation and note-taking.  He/she has a good knowledge of medical terminology and is sensitive to cultural differences. Medical interpreters work at medical settings, hospitals, and doctor's offices.

Associate Membership

The requirements for admission as an Associate Medical Interpreter of ATIA are:

  1. Pass the Code of Ethics Examination Minimum passing grade is 70%. Results are valid for one year.
  2. Submit an Application for Review

Application for Review:

The Application for Review must include:

  • Code of Ethics Examination 'pass letter' dated within the past twelve months.
  • The hour requirements under one of the following options:

Candidates will be offered Associate Medical Interpreter membership in ATIA once they meet the admission requirements. Annual membership dues Associate Members are $160.

Certification (Certified Membership)

ATIA is not currently accepting On Dossier applications for interpreters to become certified.  

Certification Examination

Requirements:

  • Pre-requisite: Be an Associate Medical Interpreter of ATIA in good standing
  • Pre-requisite: Prove hours of interpreting in a medical setting (obtain chart of hours required from admin@atia.ab.ca)
  • Submit letters of good character issued by former or current employers
  • Accepted ATIA's Terms of Membership
Annual membership dues for Certified Members are $240.
