Associate Level Prerequisite Exams – Spring 2025 ~Completed

Here are the details for the Prerequisite Exams to be held online February 8, 2025:

Important First Steps:

  • It is mandatory for All candidates to watch this “Information Presentation
    • Note: this pre-recorded presentation replaces the Information Presentation previously provided online through Zoom. Information regarding exams is subject to change and may not be updated in this recorded version.
  • It is mandatory for All candidates to fill in thisLanguage Combination & Direction formafter watching the above presentation.
  • Candidates will receive an “information package” of documents with valuable information ONLY upon completion of the above Language Combination & Direction form. 
  • Who are the associate level prerequisite exams for?
    • Members of the public wishing to become certified in their profession
    • ATIA professionals who wish to expand their professional qualification’s
    • Certified affiliates who wish to join ATIA

Prerequisite Exams:

    • Code of Ethics Exam (Translators/Interpreters ($75)
      • Case Study and multiple choice questions. Test time:  60 minutes
      • 9:15 am to 9:44 am report in time.  Test start time is 10:00 am
    • English Proficiency Exam for Translators ($75)
      • Candidates writing into English must pass an Editing test; candidates writing from English must pass a Reading-comprehension test.
      • Translator candidates have the option to take language combination exams in both directions on the same day, starting with the Editing exam followed by the Reading Comprehension for Translators. Or, translator candidates may still choose to take the exam for one direction at a time and attempt the other direction during the subsequent session.  Thus a candidate taking English into French can also attempt the other direction French into English on the same day. 
        • Editing test time:  90 minutes
          11:45 am to 12:14 pm is report in time.  Test start time is 12:30 pm
        • Reading Comprehension for translator test time:  60 minutes
          2:15 pm to 2:44 pm is report in time.  Test start time is 3:00 pm
    • Reading Comprehension Exam for Interpreters ($75)
      • Tests the candidates reading-comprehension in English.  Multiple choice questions related to short reading selections.
        Test time:  60 minutes
      • 12:15 pm to 12:44 pm is report in time.  Test start time is 1:00 pm

Exams Payment / Registration:

  • Register and Pay below.
  • Full refunds will be granted for cancellation of registration only if the Exam Coordinator is informed of the decision by e-mail within 10 days of the exam date. After that time no refund will be issued.
    • Examinations: Refunds (less a $25 administration fee) will only be given to those candidates who miss the exam due to medical reasons, provided a doctor’s note is submitted to the exams coordinator at least 24 hours prior to, or within two weeks following the exam. Refunds will not be given for any other reason. Alternate arrangements to write the exam cannot be made.
    • Registration Fees cannot be applied to other ATIA events or exams and cannot be carried forward to future examinations.
    • Candidates must be either a Canadian Citizen and resident of Alberta or a Permanent Resident of Canada and reside in Alberta.  Photo ID is required for entry into the exams.
  • ALL registrations MUST be completed through ATIA’s website.
  • Following Registration and within one week of exam date, candidates will receive exam instructions and rules.

March 25, Tuesday 6 –  8 pm Translation Processes and Practice Session What goes into a successful translation? Which processes are involved? This webinar will provide some guidance. Candidates are requested to translate a text before the webinar. We will discuss the translation processes and look at the elements that make this text challenging.
March 26, Wednesday 6 – 8 pm Revision Techniques Translation – like writing – is a process. The first draft is never the final version. In this webinar, we will discuss revision techniques for exams and professional translation work.
March 28, Friday 6 – 8 pm Translation as a Business Most translators in Canada are freelancers. Taking the step toward self-employment can be scary and requires serious thought and preparation. This webinar offers some food for thought about freelancing in today’s global economy.
