Introduction

ATIA offers membership in the categories of Translator, Court Interpreter, Community Interpreter, Medical Interpreter, and Conference Interpreter.

Each category has its own admission and certification process.To learn about the certification process and how to become a member of ATIA, please consult the category you are interested in via the side menu.

There are two levels of membership: Associate and Certified. To become a member, you must pass the associate level examinations which are held in the spring and in the fall, in Calgary and in Edmonton, Alberta.

This section has been prepared to inform potential candidates about the requirements that must be met in order to become an ATIA member.

To become an associate member of ATIA, you must pass the examination process for EITHER Interpreters OR Translators. After you become an associate member, you can write the examinations for other membership categories or language combinations. 

The next examinations that you can register for will held in the spring of 2019. Registration deadline: January 7, 2019. Register for the examinations on the Events page later this month.

Interpreters must pass the ATIA's Code of Ethics Examination and then submit an Application for Review (education and experience) within one year. See the applications in the specific interpreter areas to the left.

Translators must pass ATIA's Code of Ethics Examination and the English Proficiency for Translators Examination prior to registering for the Translation Examination. 

Registration for the Associate-level Translation Examination (for candidates who have passed the Code of Ethics for Translators Examination and the English Proficiency Examination) will be open on the website in late March 2019.

Examination Dates:

Mandatory Information Sessions for Examination Registrants will be held on Saturday morning in Edmonton (January 19) and in Calgary (January 26), 10:00 a.m. to noon.

March 9 2019, 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Calgary and Edmonton: Examinations Offered: Code of Ethics for Interpreters, Code of Ethics for Translators, and English Proficiency for Translators (translators can write both examinations).

April 13, 2019, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Calgary and Edmonton:  Associate-level Translation Examination (pre-requisites: pass the Code of Ethics Examination for Translators and the English Proficiency Examination). The registration for this examination will be open in March 2019.
