An Introduction to Translation Webinar Series with Regina Landeck

  • Many exams fail because the candidate did not successfully analyze the source text for its meaning, structure, background, tone, and literary devices. This webinar aims at raising awareness of these important aspects of a successful translation.

March 26, Tuesday             6:00 to 8:00 p.m.         Translation Processes and Practice Session

  • What goes into a successful translation? Which processes are involved? This webinar will provide some guidance. Candidates are requested to translate a text before the webinar. We will discuss the translation processes and look at the elements that make this text challenging.

March 27, Wednesday      6:00 to 8:00 p.m.         Revision Techniques

  • Translation - like writing - is a process. The first draft is never the final version. In this webinar, we will discuss revision techniques for exams and professional translation work.

March 28, Thursday            6:00 to 8:00 p.m.         Freelancing as a Translator

  • Most translators in Canada are freelancers. Taking the step toward self-employment can be scary and requires serious thought and preparation. This webinar offers some food for thought about freelancing in today's global economy.

  • Regina Landeck has been running her translation company, ProLingua Consulting, since 1998. She is a certified member of ATIA for German to English and English to German. Her educational background includes a Law Degree from Germany, a Post-graduate Diploma in Adult Education from the University of Alberta and a Master’s Degree in Translation from the University of the West of England. She has many years of experience teaching English as a Second Language, has developed online teaching materials and currently edits German language courses for Athabasca University. In addition, she teaches the ‘German to English Legal Translation II’ course in the Translation Certificate Program at New York University. Regina has been on Council of ATIA since 1995 and has served as the President of ATIA since 1998. She is very active within the professional community at the provincial and national level.

This seminar will help you develop and refine the grammatical skills you need to be a clear and concise writer. 

February 13, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.         Building Blocks: A Review of Parts of Speech and Sentence Structure

February 20, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.       Common Grammatical Mistakes and Some Issues Specific to Non-Native English Speakers

February 27, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.       Punctuation Refresher and Best Contemporary Practices

This three-part webinar will help you refine your understanding of the rules and conventions that govern English grammar and punctuation. You’ll leave the webinar with skills and resources to help you write clearly and correctly.

Before the webinar, you will complete a short questionnaire and return it. There will also be some  readings and assignments.

During the webinar, Margaret will deliver a presentation, review the assignment, take any questions, and review a couple of mock exam questions. 

  • Margaret Chandler is a teacher, writer, and editor. She teaches business writing, grammar, style, and editing at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University and delivers workshops to various organizations. She has a BA in history and a MEd in Adult Education.

Reading Comprehension Examination Preparation with Roula Salam

February 22, Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (part one)

February 23, Saturday, 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. (part two)

This webinar will help prepare you for the Language Proficiency Reading Comprehension Exam by focusing on important reading comprehension skills, such as skimming for main idea, scanning for information identifying textual structure, making inferences, evaluating a text, guessing meaning from context, timed reading, and more!  

We will focus on different skills in each webinar, and there will be practice exercises and homework as well.

Code of Ethics Examination Preparation with Regina Landeck

March 2, 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

Cost: $40.00 Registration Deadline: February 25 (minimum number of participants is 14)

This webinar will provide an overview of ATIA's Code of Ethics and the rationale behind the provisions of the Code. We will discuss some of the ethical challenges we face as translators and/or interpreters. A mini exam will offer the participants an opportunity to practice for the Code of Ethics exam.

ATIA reserves the right to cancel this program due to unforeseen circumstances. If this should occur, registrants will be given full refunds. A minimum number of 14 is required for each webinar to run.

No refunds will be issued after the pre-webinar materials have been emailed to you. Cancellations received 5 days before each webinar will be refunded minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds will be issued 4 days before the webinar. By registering for the workshop, you agree to these terms and conditions.
