Examinations:

To become an associate member of ATIA, you must pass the examination process for EITHER Interpreters OR Translators. After you become an associate member, you can write the examinations for other membership categories or language combinations. 

The next examinations that you can register for will held in the spring of 2020 and the link will be open on the website in late November. Registration deadline: December 31, 2019. 

Interpreters must pass the ATIA's Code of Ethics Examination and then submit an Application for Review (education and experience) within one year. See the applications in the specific interpreter areas on the Membership page.

Translators must pass ATIA's Code of Ethics Examination and the English Proficiency for Translators Examination prior to registering for the associate-level Translation Examination. 

Registration for the Associate-level Translation Examination (for candidates who have passed the Code of Ethics for Translators Examination and the English Proficiency Examination) will be open on the website in late September 2019.

Associate Examination Procedure For Interpreters Fall 2019

Examination Dates:

Mandatory Information Sessions for Examination Registrants will be held on Saturday morning in in January 2020 in Edmonton and in Calgary, 10:00 a.m. to noon. When you register for any of the examinations you are automatically registered for the mandatory Information Session for Examination Registrants.

March 14, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Calgary and Edmonton: Examinations Offered: Code of Ethics for Interpreters ($60), Code of Ethics for Translators ($60), and English Proficiency for Translators ($30). Translators can write both examinations.

April 11, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Calgary and Edmonton:  Associate-level Translation Examination ($125). The pre-requisites: pass the Code of Ethics Examination for Translators and the English Proficiency Examination. The registration for this examination will be open in March 2020.

Code of Ethics Examination Preparation with Regina Landeck

August 24, Saturday, 10 am to 12 noon

Cost: $40.00 Registration Deadline: August 19 (minimum number of participants is 14)

This webinar will provide an overview of ATIA's Code of Ethics and the rationale behind the provisions of the Code. We will discuss some of the ethical challenges we face as translators and/or interpreters. A mini exam will offer the participants an opportunity to practice for the Code of Ethics exam.

Reading Comprehension Examination Preparation with Roula Salam

August 30 and 31 (Friday 6 pm to 8 pm / Saturday 10 am to 12 noon)

This two-part webinar will help prepare you for the Language Proficiency Reading Comprehension Exam by focusing on important reading comprehension skills, such as skimming for main idea, scanning for information identifying textual structure, making inferences, evaluating a text, guessing meaning from context, timed reading, and more!  

We will focus on different skills in each webinar, and there will be practice exercises and homework as well.

An Introduction to Translation Webinar Series with Regina Landeck

  • Many exams fail because the candidate did not successfully analyze the source text for its meaning, structure, background, tone, and literary devices. This webinar aims at raising awareness of these important aspects of a successful translation.

September 24, Tuesday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm | Translation Processes and Practice Session

  • What goes into a successful translation? Which processes are involved? This webinar will provide some guidance. Candidates are requested to translate a text before the webinar. We will discuss the translation processes and look at the elements that make this text challenging.

September 25, Wednesday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm | Revision Techniques

  • Translation - like writing - is a process. The first draft is never the final version. In this webinar, we will discuss revision techniques for exams and professional translation work.

September 26, Thursday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm | Freelancing as a Translator

  • Most translators in Canada are freelancers. Taking the step toward self-employment can be scary and requires serious thought and preparation. This webinar offers some food for thought about freelancing in today's global economy.

  • Regina Landeck has been running her translation company, ProLingua Consulting, since 1998. She is a certified member of ATIA for German to English and English to German. Her educational background includes a Law Degree from Germany, a Post-graduate Diploma in Adult Education from the University of Alberta and a Master’s Degree in Translation from the University of the West of England. She has many years of experience teaching English as a Second Language, has developed online teaching materials and currently edits German language courses for Athabasca University. For 10 years, she taught the ‘Advanced German to English Legal Translation’ course in the Translation Certificate Program at New York University. Regina started serving on the  Council of ATIA in 1995 and was the President of ATIA for 12 years She is very active within the professional community at the provincial and national level.

Language Proficiency Examination Tutorials

Cost: $ 60/hour

ATIA is now offering one-on-one tutoring sessions to help language proficiency examination candidates prepare for the examinations (held on Saturday, September 14, 2019). 

You will be asked to submit a 4-5 paragraph essay prior to your first tutorial. The tutors will use the essay to evaluate weaknesses and errors and will provide feedback accordingly. 

Skype, e-mail, or telephone "meetings" will be set up between the tutor and the candidates. 

Register for the first hour and select the tutor you would like to work with (information is on the registration tab, at the bottom of this page). Additional hours can be purchased for the same tutor or another tutor.

Preparation Tutorial for the Associate-level Translation Examination Tutorials

Cost: $180

The ATIA Associate-level examination preparation tutorial is offered to anyone planning to attempt the associate-level translation examination (held on October 14, 2019) set by ATIA or another provincial association. Those wanting to register for the certification examination should consider a specific course for the certification examination.

The candidate will complete three translations of similar length and content as the associate-level examination. These translations will be marked and annotated by the tutor. The objective of this tutorial is to give candidates an insight into the practice of translation and make them aware of potential pitfalls in a source text. The tutor will provide detailed feedback aimed at improving the translation quality.

(Please note: you can complete this tutorial in one language combination/direction only. If you wish to do a tutorial in another language combination you must apply separately for that language combination.) 

The tutor may choose to suggest additional tasks or readings. Marked translations will be returned within a period of 2 to 3 weeks. All three translations should be completed within a period of three months.

The start date of the tutorial is flexible and it should be completed within three months.

Webinar Cancellation / Refund Policies:

ATIA reserves the right to cancel this program due to unforeseen circumstances. If this should occur, registrants will be given full refunds. A minimum number of 14 is required for each webinar to run.

No refunds will be issued after the pre-webinar materials have been emailed to you. Cancellations received 5 days before each webinar will be refunded minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds will be issued 4 days before the webinar. By registering for the workshop, you agree to these terms and conditions.
