‘Lost in Pronunciation’ & The relationship between pronunciation and social intent
In oral communication, the exact same words can have a very different meaning depending on how they are said. When formulating a message in a second language, it is common to consider how grammar and vocabulary choices can impact the tone and intent of a message. However, pronunciation also plays a large role in signifying the way someone interprets another’s words. Certainty, empathy, interest, and several other social meanings are encoded in the rhythm and intonation of our speech. This workshop will offer an overview of the role of pronunciation in changing the meaning and feeling behind words. It will include activities designed to illustrate how delivery can change a message.
