After a person becomes an associate member, he/she has six years in which to take and pass the certified level exam, the national exam administered by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council - (CTTIC). If this is not done, the member will lose his/her status. If the member passes the certified examination, he/she can become a certified member (annual dues are currently $170), and will retain membership as long as he/she pays his/her annual dues and adheres to the Code of Ethics of the Association.
