Happy New Year!

by: Allettie Bastiaansen

Hi all!
Welcome to this brand new website feature, ATIA Highlights.

Let me start by wishing everyone a great 2012 (it’s still January, so I think I can do that, besides it comes from a good heart smile). I hope the year will bring you what you are looking for in the fields of translating and interpreting, and of course on a personal level as well.
One of my resolutions is offering this blog, a new feature on the website, and I am planning on adding new content once or twice a month. There is an option for comments, so please feel free to express your thoughts on the subjects, or post suggestions.

With this blog you will be kept up to date on issues that involve ATIA, and if we need input from you on certain topics I will ask for it here as well.

In the past there have been social events for ATIA members, but lately we’ve fallen out of that habit. So, another resolution is to pick up this tradition of having get-togethers. In November there was an opportunity for coffee and a chat, with Cinthia Mazur and Yukari Meldrum in Edmonton, in December a Christmas potluck was organized by Hellen Martínez in Calgary, and in January there was a social after the workshop in preparation of the certification exam in Edmonton.  Next time I may have photo’s for you!
If you like to organize something yourself, let us know and we’ll advertise it for you. Meeting for coffee is a great opportunity to get to know colleagues and exchange ideas. If you have pictures, we’ll post them too!

With this blog I like to keep you up to date on all things ATIA, so here we go:

Professional Development
Each year with the renewal we ask you to submit a professional development form. This is optional now, but may be required in the future, so it won’t hurt to get into the habit.

For the following options you can earn 1 PD point per hour spent:

This week there is a great opportunity for PD at ProZ, https://www.proz.com/store/11042: On demand videos watch unlimited times at your own pace at a discounted price today! This week’s offer: Access to any 3 videos for $30 and any 5 videos for $45.
Membership of ProZ can be very beneficial, not only for obtaining jobs, but also for inexpensive training on a variety of topics.

And for everyone interested in interpreting there is the ATA Webinar open to non-members: Freelancing as a Remote and Distant Interpreter on January 25. More information: http://www.atanet.org/webinars/ataWebinar103_remote.php

Member Benefits
In ending this first entry I would like to remind everyone of some of the advantages you have as members of ATIA.

Staples Reward Programme. More information: http://www.atia.ab.ca/images/uploads/Communiqu%C3%A9_Staples_bil.pdf
Feel free to give Crystal Keir a call, she can explain exactly how it works. Everybody needs office supplies, so why not enjoy some discounts!

Our website designer Kiska Dazyn, is offering a great deal to our members. Please have a look at the following link http://www.kiskadazyn.com/atia and see what he can do for you!

Don’t forget to post your comments!

Brilliant initiative to keep the language professionals connected!

Good idea Allettie, thanks for the blog. However, I have one complaint - your inclusion of proz.com as a resource for ATIA members. Proz.com is the antithesis of professional: jobs are auctioned at rock-bottom prices by often shady outsources with extremely poor payment practices and questionable ethics; members routinely offer (and are encouraged to offer) their services in multiple languages and areas of specialization; the site awards Professional “accreditation” to members, with no attempt at verifying their ability; and the site is a blatant shill for machine translation companies. I am dismayed to think that ATIA might consider itself on a par with this site. Proz.com has nothing to do with translation and everything to do with realizing an ever-greater revenue stream for its founder, Henry Dotterer. Please rethink your recommendation.

What a great initiative, Allettie!  It opens up an easily accessible platform for info exchange, communication and discussion.  Paula Rennie’s warning on Proz.com is a good example of this function, which I am sure is appreciated by many. Allettie, thank you for your leadership in taking this step as we journey into 2012.  Chinese New Year fell on Jan. 23 this year.  It is not too late to say Happy Chinese New Year and wish you all good health, happiness and success for the year of the dragon and many years to come.
