Hi all, thank you all for your reactions to my first blog entry and for the comments. I would strongly suggest to read the comments, because they may contain information that could be of interest to you. It is very informative to see different viewpoints, so you can make informed decisions for yourself.
I’ve named this one ATIA Highlights 2, and yes, thank you, I agree that is a very clever way of coming up with unique titles
But for now it will definitely be easy to keep them apart - you’ll know immediately whether you missed one or not. And if you did, you’ll find the previous entry to the left.
Let me start this entry with something I promised last time. PHOTOS!!!
This is the Christmas party in Calgary, unfortunately some guests had already left when the picture was taken.

Good news
Many of you will be aware of the change announced by CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) that all translations had to be accompanied by an affidavit, even translations done by certified translators. We, along with other provincial associations, have asked CTTIC’s help to speak for all of us, and they did. It is my pleasure to tell you that CIC included a paragraph which states that our members now no longer need to provide an affidavit. It might be a good idea to bookmark this page
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0002ETOC.asp#CIT0002E4.
The section about ‘Translated Documents’ is almost halfway down, and the following note is highlighted in yellow:
Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a person
authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents
of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original
document. Translators who are certified members in good standing of one of the
provincial or territorial organizations of translators and interpreters of Canada do not need
to supply an affidavit.
Court Interpreters
Exciting times for our court interpreters, members who are interested in becoming a court interpreter or members who are just interested period!
ACIC (Alberta Court Interpreters Course) is a new initiative by the Alberta Courts and Alberta lawyers. They are providing training for court interpreters and ACIC and ATIA are looking at ways of cooperating in the future.
The following link shows a schedule of mini-sessions and full courses they offer:
A mini-session with pizza for only $5 - check it out!
Scam
We’ve had some warning about translators being scammed, often through e-mails from Kenth ZEBRA. Apparently they send a huge document, along with a cheque (one example is Bank of America), but the cheque will be fake. Please be careful when accepting work. Try to contact each other if something seems fishy, the get-together would be an excellent place to discuss these things, but you can also add it to the comments of this blog, so everybody can see the latest developments, exchange experiences, or put your mind at ease.
Just after I typed this I actually saw this in my inbox, what are the chances! This one of the e-mails:
kenth zebra ✆ .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
“Hello,
as am browsing through the profile on atia.ab.ca I came across your profile,I kindly want you to translate one of my book that I need to translate ,am a private investor.
If you are interested in translating for me kindly contact me back immediately you received my message for more information about the project.
Thanks,
Regards.”
Hope you’re having a great day, enjoy this read and please leave a comment, even if it is not related to the content - anything you have to share is welcome.
Cheerio,
Allettie
So many great news! Thank you so much, Allettie! I found the email from the scam in my spam box today… what do you know, hey?
So far, there are seven people confirmed to go to the get-together in Calgary… can’t wait! And I will take pictures with all of us this time!
Thanks you for the precious time you’re putting into the blog, Allettie. And I know I’m not the only one that appreciates your wonderful efforts!
Cheers,
Hellen :o)

Dear Alletie,
Your blog is great! I’m not always able to participate in ATIA activities, but it certainly is nice to be able to read about what’s going on.
Thanks and keep up the good work,
Susan

Thanks a lot for posting this newsletter. It’s a great way to stay informed.
I also received the email from Mr. Zebra… The name did sound fishy…
I am looking forward to attending the next Edmonton get-together to finally meet some of my colleagues. Thanks again.

Allettie,
Thank you for this other great highlight. I definitely recognize some faces in the pictures you posted. ![]()
Mr. Zebra tried to befriend me too!

Hello all,
I too received a job offer from Kenth Zebra. Please be aware that the scammer(s) behind that name also use the names Michelle Franscolli, Keith Boak and Elizabeth O’Donovan. The names vary, but the scam is always the same. Good thing I always google prospective clients before accepting a new job, it saved me a lot of grief!
On another note, I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend tonight’s get-together in Calgary - have fun!

The safest thing to do is NOT to reply to scam messages, NOT to open any attachments (which may contain viruses), and simply delete them—or mark them as unsafe/blocked senders with your junkmail option.
Much appreciate this blog-post! I had no idea the CIC had put in the requirement for an affidavit from translators, and just this week I phoned their toll-free line to inform them that the posted guideline pdf for the citizenship application for minors was missing the caveat for certified translators that was already there for the other documents. And yes, they updated it within two days.
